Before, Sandra says she was “lost in darkness, barely seeing the light of day.”
Today, she says, every day is filled with brightness.
“My life began when I walked through the doors of Discovery House.”
In 2006, Sandra sought refuge from an abusive relationship at Discovery House, a Calgary women’s shelter. There, she not only found safety for herself and her child, but also the support she needed to get back on her feet, both emotionally and financially.
Sandra also received a Hands-Up Bursary that allowed her to go back to school. Today she lives in a safe home in the community and has nearly finished her bachelor’s degree.
Sandra has worked extremely hard to gain her independence and to recover from the devastating effects of domestic violence.
“I am empowered by how much my life has transformed,” she says.
