At the Canadian Women’s Foundation, we understand the western spirit.
You like to take risks, forge uncharted territory, and get done what needs to get done.
For the last twenty years, we’ve been using this approach to help women and girls move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence.
-
We’re helping to stop the violence by supporting every one of Alberta’s 38 women’s shelters and eight violence prevention programs. We have also partnered with Dr. Leslie Tutty, one of Canada’s top experts on domestic violence, who works right here at the University of Calgary. She evaluated our violence prevention programs for teens and discovered they work even better than we imagined.
-
We are helping to end poverty in Alberta by training low-income women to launch small businesses or work in high-paying skilled trades. For example, at Women Building Futures in Edmonton, women train for jobs in construction and the oil and gas industry. Women from central and northern Alberta have the option of living on-site in one of 42 affordable apartments. And in Calgary, we support Momentum's self-employment program for low-income women—the Women's Venture Accelerator program—one of the leading programs in this field in Canada.

-
We empower girls to become the leaders of tomorrow. Our investments include the award-winning Girls Inc. project, offered in Fort McMurray, Janvier, and Fort MacKay. Most of the girls who attend are from Aboriginal communities. In the first week of one of the programs, the girls were asked to draw a picture of a leader. They all drew white men in suits carrying briefcases. By the time the program ended, the girls were drawing pictures of their grandmothers, their mothers, and themselves.
We have funded programs all across the province, from Hinton to Medicine Hat, from Banff to High Level, from Lethbridge to Grande Prairie. We have made significant investments in Calgary and Edmonton to reflect the important work being done in those centres and the amazing circles of our supporters who live in those communities.
