2011 Toronto Breakfast - Gloria Steinem

Gloria SteinemGloria Steinem calls herself a “hope-aholic.”

Even though women have not yet reached full economic and social equality, she has seen enough change over her forty years of activism to know anything is possible.

On September 28, 2011, Gloria was the honoured keynote speaker at our 20th anniversary fundraising breakfast. The sold-out event was attended by 1,100 women and men who wanted to help give women and girls a chance for a better life.

In her speech, Gloria called the Canadian Women’s Foundation “a bright star in the global women’s movement” because our work is rooted in creating independence, not dependence, by helping women and girls move out of violence, out of poverty, and into confidence.

In an interview later, she also said the thing that brings her the most joy in life is visiting community organizations that work with women, knowing they were seeded by money she helped to raise.

Inspired by Gloria’s message of hope – and by an incredible offer from The Honourable Margaret Norrie McCain to match every dollar raised – the crowd soared to new levels of generosity, donating $2.2 million in support of Women Moving Women and the Canadian Women’s Foundation.

If you share Gloria’s hope for the future, we invite you to watch Gloria’s speech, learn more about our unique Women Moving Women campaign, and find out how you can take action now to give women and girls a chance for a better life.
